Lizard in Limbo
I created this print by hand-carving grooves into a large wooden block and spreading ink over the raised surfaces to stamp a piece of paper. I was inspired by the symmetry found within skeletal anatomy, and I wanted to mimic the intricate aesthetic of fossils by incorporating my scientific mindset and “vulture culture” hobby into my art. Given that I prefer to draw organic patterns, I considered this a personal challenge to create the polyhedron-like shape that frames the lizard skull.
Although this first attempt at wood block printing contains some minor flaws, I found that the precision of geometric designs is very rewarding to execute, and I plan to further explore how texture can be manipulated in this medium.
