Medusa
This piece began with a ribbon dipped in gold paint, which I placed on one half of the paper. By folding it in half, the mark left by the ribbon was copied on to both sides. I interpreted the winding figures as snake-like and transformed them into red and gold snakes held by Medusa. Then, in order to create a busy composition, I filled most of the space with colorful, writhing snakes of different species. This piece was an exploration of symmetry and how texture can be used to differentiate between similar forms. I also created a contrast between the complexity of the top of the piece and the cavernous emptiness at the bottom in order to draw the viewer's attention to the gold hand in the middle, which is empty, unlike the other two.
