Rachel and Her Hair
This stylized portrait of my friend Rachel was based on a reference picture I took. With half her face hidden in deep shadow, I sought to emphasize her features using short, measured strokes of the carving tool. In order to translate the waviness of her hair without having it blend into her face, I used a bold line style instead of hatching. I'm very pleased with how this piece successfully captures the pensive, yet open expression of the subject. The difference in textures creates an interesting contrast between the light and dark parts of the image.
