Swings Both Ways
This self portrait is physically enormous, making it a challenge to create. I used a large palette knife to create a thick black background, allowing the corrugated texture of the cardboard piece to alter my strokes. On top, I painted myself gazing off to the side, surrounded by rough splashes of color. The title is a reference to a common euphemism for bisexuality, which is indicated here by the limited color scheme of pink and blue. I chose to depict myself looking stoic with my head held high because it reflects my pride for my sexuality and my determination to be true to myself, despite the "rough" patches I will experience. On such a large canvas with such personal subject matter, I do not want to be ignored.
I executed this painting on a salvaged cardboard panel split in half and held together by tape. Literally speaking, it folds in half in both directions--another nod to the theme of bisexuality.
